ABSTRACT
Background: The plants elaborate substances called primary and secondary metabolites. The latter are those who have greater importance for their biological activity and have been used as a medicinal remedy for all cultures for millennia. Several types of which, among others: alkaloids, anthraquinones, coumarin, stilbenes, phenols, flavonoids, fuconines, naphthalenpolyphenols, polysaccharides, saponins and taxanes, have shown inhibitory antiplatelet activity or inhibition of the blood coagulation
in vitro or
in vivo. Some plants being consumed can interact among themselves, or with medications administered, inhibiting them, or worse still, potentializing or increasing their action, affecting its pharmacological activity.
Objetive: To develop a list of some plants reported as blood thinners or reducers of speed clotting, in order to recommend that they are not eaten before or after any surgical intervention, and prevent excessive bleeding problems occuring by their interaction with anticoagulants or blood clotting mechanisms.
Material and Method: By key words, books, pages on internet, databases, etc. were reviewed, and we made a list with the information.
Results: There were obtained data about 50 species including food supplements, condiments, common beverages or medicinal plants consumed and we present their: scientific & common names, traditional medicinal uses, some chemical information, observations and their corresponding bibliography. Also we present a research concerning to the physiology, models and theories of blood coagulation and history of anticoagulants or blood thinners from vegetable origin.
