ABSTRACT
Objetive: To expose another possible cause of tinnitus, relating to the temporomandibular joint through the discomallear ligament, as one of the many causes of tinnitus.
Material and Method: A retrospective, descriptive, observational study was done including patients with tinnitus and cranial-vertebro-mandibular dysfunction who were attended at the Clinic of Facial Pain, University Hospital of Puebla and in the Clinic of Facial Pain of the Autonomous University of Mexico (FES Zaragoza), from July 2015 to July 2016. Simultaneously, microdissections of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in adult corpses at the Faculty of Medicine of Montevideo, Uruguay, were performed, with the purpose of defining the anatomical relationship between tinnitus and TMJ.
Results: A total of 457 patients were revised, 260 had tinnitus (57%) and 197 patients earache (43%), the majority being female. In all dissections were observed the union between the meniscus of articular temporomandibular joint and the hammer by a ligament, the discomallear ligament, through the petrotympanic fissure.
Conclusion: From the anatomical point of view, the relationship found between the meniscus of the joint of the jaw and the hammer may be the cause of tinnitus in some patients.
