ABSTRACT
Introduction: diabetes mellitus precipitates atherosclerotic changes in the complete vascular layer, so, it increases the risk to develop cardiovascular diseases. Objective: To characterize hospitalized patients with diagnosis of diabetes mellitus type 2 according to clinical findings and global cardiovascular risks.
Method: An investigation with observational, descriptive ,transversal character , was developed in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 admitted to the Internal Medicine Service at “Leopoldito Martínez”, Hospital from January, 2011 to December, 2015. The sample was formed by 108 patients and the information was taken by the patients’ clinical records, it allowed to characterize each case clinically.
Results: patients between 70 to 79 years old (36,11 %) prevailed and the female sex was slightly more frequent (53,70 %). Smokers older than 60 years old represented the 62,04 %. The most elevated systolic blood pressure was presented in diabetic smokers, prevailing the ranges of values between 160–179 mmHg (63,64 %) and ≥ 180 mmHg (60,00 %). When stratificating the global cardiovascular risks, patients with categories of high and very high were the most frequent (31,48 %).
Conclusions: Diabetic patients older than 60 years old, smokers, with high blood pressure and high and very high global cardiovascular risk prevailed.
