ABSTRACT
Objective: Determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in a
sample of patients from the outpatient Regional Military Hospital of
Acapulco, Guerrero.
Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was made,
conducted in the Regional Military Hospital of Acapulco in Guerrero
state, during the period from 21 September 2015 to 25 February
2016 and patients of the outpatient department of the hospital were
included. The calculation of the sample with the EPI INFO program,
which a database was obtained, a descriptive statistical analysis was
developed to meet the MS prevalence in this population and the results
were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS Statistics 20.0 IMB.
Results: We recorded a sample of 267 patients. The prevalence
obtained according to the criteria of the FID in our sample was 63%
(n=162), with a higher percentage of women 52.14% (n=134). The
mean age of 54.56 ± 12.37 years in patients with metabolic syndrome,
and average age of 42.65 ± 15.78 years in individuals without
metabolic syndrome, the age group most representative, in the total
sample with or without metabolic syndrome was 51-60 years with
29.1% (n=111), 33% (n=65) 24.9% (n=46) respectively. The mean
hip circumference patients with metabolic syndrome was 106.79 ±
10.88, and without metabolic syndrome was 102.03 ± 8.96. The mean
waist-hip ratio in the total sample was 0.93 ± 0.50, in individuals with
metabolic syndrome was 0.90 ± 0.05 and without metabolic syndrome
average was 0.98 ± 0.83.
Conclusion: The metabolic syndrome is one of the most prevalent
pathologies in Mexican society. This study shows the factor with the
highest incidence is obesity and overweight, since it is a sedentary
population, with poor nutrutions habits, resulting in dyslipidemia and
predisposition to chronic-degenerative diseases.
