Comparation clomiphene citrate and letrozole for induction of ovulation and pregnancy its effectiveness in patients with infertility

ABSTRACT
Objetive: To compare the efficacy of letrozole vs. clomiphene citrate
(CC) in women with infertility due to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS) treated at the Hospital for Women.
Material and Methods: Single prospective randomized study
in patients with PCOS who were given inducing ovulation and monitoring
was performed by transvaginal ultrasound on 6, 9 and 12 of
the menstrual cycle to assess follicular and endometrial growth and
success with pregnancy.
Results: The groups were composed of 24 patients, 31.7 ± 5.7 years.
Group A was composed of 12 patients for treatment with letrozole
and 12 patients with CC to the B group. Number of cycles to achieve
pregnancy group 1.3 ± 0.5 and 1.1 ± 0.4 in group B (ME ± SD); number
of schemes to achieve pregnancy group ± 1.2 0.4 ± 1.1 and 0.4
group B; endometrial growth group 1.8 ± 8.7, 8.2 ± 0.9 in group B and
pregnancy success 16.6% for group A, and 0% for group B. Number of
cycles to achieve pregnancy (p = 0.07); number of schemes to achieve
pregnancy (p = 0.33); follicular growth (p = 0.28); greater number of
follicles produced in the cycle (p = 0.46); endometrial growth (p =
0.03), pregnancy success (p = 0.01).
Conclusion: Letrozole had no more efficacious than CC who
despite having presented a lower endometrial growth achieved success
with pregnancy.
