Development of research work in the public health in the postgraduate curricula

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Research in public health has been identified as an important problem to be taken into account for the appropriate development of a country under different conditions. Cuba and Guatemala present restrictions in this respect.Objective: To identify the development of research in the field of the public health in educational programs of Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala and the National School of Public Health of Cuba.
Method: Descriptive study including the period of 2010 to 2014. Literature search and documentary review with critical analysis of theses and records of students were made. The theses were identified by editions, research topics and lines and their relationship with the Essential Functions of Public Health.
Results: The theses in the three programs respond to health problems of each country, to their stated research lines and to the Essential Functions of Public Health. The most studied topics were epidemiology, social management and formation of human resources.
Conclusions: The theses are learning products that favor the development of the public health of every country. There are pending areas to be studied on useful topics for the public health specialty and its essential functions.
