ABSTRACT
Background: The acute appendicitis is the most common surgical
emergency found by surgeons. It has a very low incidence during
pregnancy (1 in 1500 cases) and it is even rarer that a carcinoid tumor
presents as an acute appendicitis during pregnancy. The diagnosis
of carcinoid tumor it’s done by histopathology and rarely suspected
preoperatively. We report the case of a carcinoid tumor presenting as
an acute appendicitis in a pregnant woman with 9-week gestation.
Case Report: 21-year-old pregnant woman with 9-week gestation
by ultrasonography, which has a history of importance of a C-section
5 years ago. Starts with abdominal pain in epigastrium irradiated to
right flank, nausea and vomiting, treated with medication without
clinical improvement, admitted to the ER with signs of acute abdomen
suggestive of appendicitis, being studied and treated surgically.
Conclusion: The carcinoid tumor during pregnancy can be presented
as an acute appendicitis and it’s generally an incidental finding
(80% of the cases) during the histopathology of the appendix, because
of the lack of clinical signs that suggests a diagnostic preoperatively.
