Level of colonization of streptococcus mutans in oral cavity from newborns according to type of birth

ABSTRACT
Objective. To determinethe level of colonization of Streptococcus mutans in the oral cavity in newbornsthon 24 hours old and its relationship to the path of birth. Material ond methods. Comparotive, exploratoryand transversal study; according probabilitysampling included a total of 154 infonts 24 hours old, forming two groups, with 77 infont seach, according to mode of delivery {vaginal or cesa reo n); in the mate mity service ot Victor Lazarte Echegaray hospital from Trujillo-Peru. Newborns were token o sol ivary sample, it wos transportad to the microbiology la boratory, processing it into especific culture medium for subsequent microbiological count of Streptococcus mutans. Results. High levels of colonization of Streptococcus mutans, for 10.4% and 2.6% of those born vaginally and caesarean section were determined respectively {p ‹0.05). Conclusions. lt is concluded thot within 24 hours of birth, the prevailing level of colonization of Streptococcus mutans in the oral cavity is low in both groups, and that the high level is associated with the route of vaginal birth.
