ABSTRACT
Nutritional status is a fundamental aspect of life. Chronic non-communicable diseases are among the leading causes of death in Cuba. A descriptive study was conducted in 86 elderly patients from the health area polyclinic Jimmy Hirzel during 2015. Nutritional status and its relation with chronic non-communicable diseases, was determined. The population was characterized by sexes and age groups. Anthropometric measures of weight and height were taken to calculate the body mass index. The female gender predominated with 47 patients (54.6 %) and the age group 60-74 years old (48.8 %). The most frequent disease was hypertension with 46 elderly people (53.48%), followed by ischemic heart disease (19.76 %), diabetes mellitus (17.44 %) and neoplasms (9.30 %). The elderly were characterized by 2-3 diseases (51.16 %) and normal nutritional status (2 cases), followed by overweight and obesity with 38 patients. In the group of malnourished, 4 cases had between 2-3 diseases and 1 case a single disease. There was a predominance of overweight and obesity in chronic diseases. Nutrition care and education should be improved for older adults to prevent and control them.REFERENCES
