ABSTRACT
Purpose: To compare the mediate efficacy of three different concentrations of phenylephrine, applied in healthy children.Material and methods: A prospective, descriptive, double blind and longitudinal study was made. We included 30 eyes from 30 patients, between 1 and 12 years old, in which a routine ophthalmoscopy was performed. In each one, in a randomized way, one of the three formulations concentrations of topic phenylephrine eye drops were applied (2.5%-10 patients, 5%-10 patients and 10%-10 patients). Horizontal and vertical pupil diameter measures were made at different time intervals.
Results: The patients who received 10% topic phenylephrine showed bigger vertical as well as horizontal pupil diameters than those with the other concentrations when were compared.
Conclusions: 10% ophthalmic phenylephrine shown to be more effective than 2.5% and 5% phenyleprine eye drops to induce mydriasis in children.
