History of Nephrology in Pinar del Río. Part-I

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Nephrology is one of the newest specialties of Medical Sciences. It is a branch of the clinical practice dedicated to deepen on knowledge about the structure, functions and diseases of the kidney and urinary tract that begins in Cuba in 1962 up to reaching the rank of specialty in 1966 with the opening of Nephrology Institute at "Joaquín Albarrán" Clinical Surgical Hospital in Havana.
Objective: to present the history of Nephrology in Pinar del Rio province with its ups and downs, experiences and achievements from 1970-2015, presented in two periods with its stages of lack of understanding and difficulties faced by the staff of the specialty until reaching a growing quality.
Method: a testimonial review of prestigious professionals and technicians who collaborated with the specialty and important bibliographical references about the emergence and development of Nephrology in Pinar del Rio from its beginnings.
Results: the scientific and technical advances of the specialty of Nephrology that were initiated in the National Institute of Nephrology are shown allowing its development in all the provinces, Pinar del Rio one of the first to do this with ostensible and relevant results that favored the recognition at provincial and national level.
Conclusions: from the testimonies essential information about the professionals and technicians who collaborated in the development of Nephrology was recorded, the difficulties they faced until conquering the current higher level the specialty has in Pinar del Rio province.
