Results of surgical treatment in patients undergoing ocular plastic surgery with CO2 laser

ABSTRACT

Introduction: ophthalmology has undergone a real revolution since the appearance of laser technology, specifically in Ocular Plastic Surgery, with the advent of the CO2 laser.
Objective: to describe the results of surgical treatment in patients undergoing ocular plastic surgery with CO2 laser.
Method: a cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study was carried out at "Abel Santamaria Cuadrado" General Teaching Hospital, from January 2013 to December 2015. The target group included 1536 patients undergoing ocular plastic surgery and the sample was comprised of 319 cases undergoing laser surgery of CO2. The analysis of the information was done by means of Microsoft Excel 2010 and the results were presented in tables and graphs.
Results: the majority of the patients presented were between 40 and 60 years old (51.4%), women (60.5%), white skin (56.4%) and the surgery was performed for therapeutic purposes (67%). Eyelid tumor (30.1%), it was the most frequent condition, followed by dermatochalasis (26.3%) and ectropion (12.8%). The surgical time that prevailed was less than 30 minutes (44.5%) and the transoperatory and postoperative complications were scarce. The degree of satisfaction was good in 93.3%. Conclusions: the results of surgical treatment in patients undergoing ocular plastic surgery with CO2 laser were satisfactory, with a relatively short surgical time, a low number of complications and a good degree of satisfaction in most patients.
