ABSTRACT
Purpose: Study of the correlation between changes in visual acuity and changes in latent nystagmus explored with a translucent cover test.Material and methods: 50 eyes were explored, 25 patients with latent nystagmus in which visual acuity was taken with an opaque cover and a translucent cover, comparing the changes in visual acuity with the nystagmus movement.
Results: Visual acuity improved in 25 eyes of 17 patients (68%), in average visual acuity improved one line in the Snellen chart. Nystagmus improved in 18 eyes (36%) without finding a correlation with visual improvement.
Conclusion: Visual acuity is best explored with a translucent cover obtaining a more precise result in patients with latent nystagmus. The changes in magnitude of the nystagmus will not be evident for the explorer even when the improvement of the visual acuity is the result of the improvement of the nystagmus.
