ABSTRACT
Parasites infections occur very frequently in childhood. They always bring negative consequences for the child and the family, affecting not only the family health but the stability and economy in one way or another. A descriptive transversal study was carried out as part of a community project of the Health Technology School in Cerro municipality between October 2012 and April 2013. Its aim was to determine the frequency of intestinal parasitism and some possibly related factors in children who attend “Flor de la Amistad”, nursery school of the same municipality. The study emerged in response of the high number of children diagnosed with intestinal parasitosis in the reported period. One probabilistic stratified sample was taken from the childhood population between 1 and 6 years old. Data collection included samples of feces examined by direct and concentration methods. A survey was applied to the children´s parents to inquire about their information level about intestinal parasitism. The participation consent was requested in written form. The results showed that 4.4% of the 179 children of both sexes were affected by Giardia lamblia, the only parasite detected. There was a higher frequency of infection in children from 4th to 6th year of life. The main risk factors that appear to be associated with intestinal parasitism were: drinking unboiled water, carrying hands to mouth and eating unwashed fruits and vegetables.
