ABSTRACT
Introduction: The analysis of prescription of generic pharmaceuticals is useful to
control policies and to lay down bases for awareness campaigns addressed to the
mediators of the drug purchasing process (prescribers).
Objective: To find out the perception and the performance of physicians regarding
the prescription of generic pharmaceuticals southeastern state of Mexico.
Methods: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and comparative research
study conducted in 330 physicians from institutions, private medical centers and
under contract in drugstores. The data collection instrument called PAMPEFG-01
was used.
Results: The professionals were mostly general practitioners (60 %). This group
had broader knowledge about the effectiveness and advantages offered by generic
pharmaceuticals in comparison with medical specialists (33 %), with p= 0.000.
Physicians aged 25 to 34 years agreed (55 %) and fully agreed (43 %) with
decreasing drug expenditures represented by the generic pharmaceuticals. Young
physicians with less seniority at work and no medical certification, agreed (47 %)
and fully agreed (48 %) with the prescription of generic pharmaceuticals (p=
0,000). Physicians who work at drugstores fully agreed with the prescription and
sale of generic drugs (100 %), they also agreed that the generic pharmaceuticals
are essentially similar to the original ones and that the origin of the manufacturing
laboratories (100 %) should be known, which was different from the opinions of the
private sector (64 %) and the institutional sector (44 %), respectively.
Conclusions: Physicians assess and prescribe generic pharmaceuticals in
institutions and pharmacies. In the private sector, the physicians opt for patented
drugs.
