ABSTRACT
Background: evolution of acute respiratory failure in young adult patients is better when it is applied non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
Objective: to determine the effectiveness of non-invasive mechanical ventilation in young adult patients admitted at the intensive care units.
Method: a quasi-experimental trial was carried out taking those young adult patients with acute respiratory failure who were admitted at the intensive care units of the “Manuel Ascunce Domenech” University Hospital in Camagüey city from January 15th, 2015 to January 15th, 2016.
Results: pneumonia was the main reason to offer this kind of ventilation, the non-favourable evolution caused the biggest percent of failures, fifty percent of patients with non-invasive mechanical ventilation presented both a stay hospital less than seven days in the intensive care units and an inferior mortality.
Conclusions: the results of this trial showed both a stay hospital less than seven days and an inferior mortality in young adult patients who were applied non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
