ABSTRACT
Introduction: to know about prognosis of ventilated patients optimizes the available resources for its care and to allow the individual health assistance. Objective: to evaluate the initial APACHE II score as predictor of mortality in ventilated patients.
Method: a descriptive, prospective and transversal trial was carried out in the intensive care unit of the Salvador Allende hospital in the period of time from January 2013 to January 2014. The universe was 132 cases and it was taken a not probabilistic intentional sample of the 111 patients for the inclusion and exclusion criterions.
Results: both ages between 70 and 84 years old and feminine sex were predominant. Pre-established mortality was less than observed one with point of 20 and the main causes of death in ventilated patients were respiratory ones. APACHE II score presented a high positive predict value and a negative predict value moderate or low.
Conclusions: both a high sensibility and low specificity of the APACHE II predict model, were observed in our patients.
