ABSTRACT
Among the diverse causes of male infertility, genital infections, usually underestimated, have shown up as one of the most important causes of several reproductive disorders during the last years. Chlamydia trachomatis and some Mycoplasma species, specially Ureaplasma, are pathogens which arise from the wet mucous membranes and install themselves in glands and the coating epithelium of the genital ducts. These bacteria directly affect the spermatozoid by adhering to it and penetrating into its cytoplasm; but they also do this in an indirect way through oxygen reactive species, harmful molecules which are released during the inflammatory response. Even though the information keeps on being contradictory, several reports have related the infections caused by Mycoplasma and Chlamydia to seminal quality deterioration, spermatic dysfunction, and connubial infertility.
