ABSTRACT
Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale is a Gram-negative and pleomorphic bacterium that has been associated with outbreaks of respiratory disease in turkey-breeder egglayer hens, turkeys-, broiler breeder- and chicken meats.
O. rhinotracheale infections result in decreased egg production, growth depression, and in severe cases even death. The bacterium was first named in 1994, and has been reported in several countries. The first case was reported in Mexico in 1997. Researchers have not been able to experimentally reproduce lesions or death caused by
O. rhinotracheale infection in turkeys or in chickens and have suggested that it may be a secondary pathogen, while others have reported virulence diferences among isolates. This paper is a review of recent published articles dealing with
O. rhinotracheale infections.
