ABSTRACT
Objective: to know the effect of an educational intervention on biochemical parameters of diabetic patients, users of an institutional health service. Methods: quasi-experimental study, a sample of 25 persons was studied with a diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus type 2 (dm2), users of the medical services of the Juárez Autonomous University of Tabasco. Before the educational intervention an assessment was made, where demographic, clinical and biochemical data were obtained. Monthly group discussions with individual delivery of informational material on Diabetes Mellitus type 2, prevention and treatment were given. Finally a post-intervention assessment with collection of new biochemical parameters was made. Results: the average obtained was 54.2 ±14.5 years of age, 64% (n=16) female. Pre-intervention average of: 164.9 ±71.0 mg/dl of glucose, 8.0 ±1.2% HbA1c; 1.0 ±0.43 mg/dl of creatinine; 37.2 ±13.3 mg/dl of urea; 19.7 ±10.3 mg/dl bun; 238.9 ±64.7 mg/dl of cholesterol; and 283.2 ±142.6 mg/dl of triglycerides; and post-intervention 149.10 ±65.2 mg/dl of glucose; 7.4 ±1.2% HbA1c; 0.8 ±0.3 mg/dl of creatinine; 35.7 ±12.6 mg/ dl of urea; 17.7 ±7.6 mg/dl bun; 191.5 ±35 mg/dl of cholesterol; and 181.2 ±145.2 mg/dl of triglycerides; There were statistically significant differences p‹0.05 for glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol and triglycerides. Conclusions: health education is a tool with direct effects on the modification of the biochemical parameters explored.REFERENCES
