ABSTRACT
There is little research on male body image, especially on the
drive for muscularity. The objective of the present study was
to compare the aesthetic model internalization, body dissatisfaction
and drive for muscularity in 81 male gym users and
98 sedentary males who answered the Drive for Muscularity
Scale, Body Shape Questionnaire, and the Questionnaire on
Influences on Body Shape Model. The results showed higher
scores on these measures by gym users than by sedentary
males, except for the subscales of influence of muscular models
and body dissatisfaction. Significant associations among
measures were found. Gym users showed correlations of
greater magnitude, compared to sedentary males. This study
provides evidence on some aspects related to body image
concerns in men, especially in users of gyms.
