Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of bipolar disorder at the Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía 'Manuel Velasco Suárez'. An analysis in a four-years period

ABSTRACT

Objective. To examine characteristics of hospitalized psychiatric patients with bipolar disorder mainly type I at the Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía "Manuel Velasco Suárez" (INNN MVS).
Method: Epidemiological analyses of clinical features of Bipolar Disorder at the INNN MVS from 1996 to 1999.
Results. Sample was made by 165 patients, 13.13% of total inpatients, both sexes, mainly women in proportion 1.26:1; with first episode during late adolescence, and was young adults in 78% of cases, with psychotic episodes mainly during summer time.
Conclusions. Mean time of evolution is near 8 years, with two hospitalizations and 73 days in these, with free interval near 3.5 years. The first cause of relapse was suspension of prophylactic treatment.
