ABSTRACT
Merkel cell carcinoma is an infrequent tumor which has a very aggressive evolution and a high propensity for locoregional recurrences and metastases. Sun-exposed areas are mainly affected, especially in elderly people. Its incidence has quadrupled in the last decades due to population ageing and thanks to immunohistochemistry techniques that have allowed a higher number of people diagnosed. Pathogenesis of Merkel cell carcinoma is not precise, but ultraviolet radiation, immunosupression and presence of polyomavirus in the tumor genome seem to play an important role in the development of this neoplasm. The aim of this article is to report a clinical case of the natural history of this rare skin tumor, as well as, to explain in detail some histologic and immunohistochemical features necessary for its diagnosis and staging, given its great importance in establishing a prognosis for these patients.
