ABSTRACT
Airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) is a pressure-limited, time-cycle assisted mechanical ventilation, which allows ventilatory efforts throughout the respiratory cycle through an exhalation valve. It has many advantages over conventional ventilation, including continuous alveolar recruitment, improved oxygenation, preservation of spontaneous breathing, improved hemodynamics and potential lung protective effects. This paper reviews the different methods proposed for APRV settings and summarizes the different studies related to this ventilatory modality.
