Lymphoproliferative disorders of the orbit and ocular adnexa.

ABSTRACT
Purpose: To describe the clinical and histopathological features of the lymphoproliferative disorders of the orbit and ocular adnexa between the years 1988 and 2003, in the Hospital «Dr. Luis Sánchez Bulnes» (Asociacion Para Evitar la Ceguera en México) utilizing the REAL classification.
Design: Retrospective case series study.
Materials and methods: Patients with clinical-pathological diagnosis of lymphoproliferative disorders of the orbit and ocular adnexa were collected between the years 1988 and 2003; the histopathological features were correlated with the clinical behavior of the lesion.
Results: 53 cases (64% woman and 36%men) were reviewed. Average of age at moment of diagnostic: 57.1 years (SD ± 19.1; interval between 10 and 87 years). 59% of the cases had orbital compromise and the remaining 30% corresponded to conjunctival lesions (9 cases). Only 11% of the cases presented primary affection of the tear gland. Utilizing the REAL classification: 43% of the cases corresponded to lymphomas type B (Diffuse small cells). The lymphoplasmocitoid and mantle lymphomas had lower frequencies (3.7%) compared to that reported in the literature (5 -10%).
