ABSTRACT
Objective. To analyze the epidemiology, risk factors and prognosis of acute renal failure episodes in patients bearing the diagnosis
of preeclampsia-eclampsia women.
Material and methods. A descriptive, observational cross-sectional study was carried-out from
June 2002 to June 2003, which included patients bearing the diagnosis of preeclampsia-eclampsia according to the ACOG criteria
and who eventually developed acute renal failure. The analysis of our results is presented in percentages and using standard
deviation.
Results. We determined a prevalence of 4.08% from this subgroup, 7.1% ultimately developed acute renal failure. Their
mean age was 26.8 years and the mean weeks’ gestation was 34.5. 31% of our patients were primigravidas while the remainder
showed a mean of 3.5 prior pregnancies. 92% of our preeclampticas patients were admitted to he ICU, of whom 23% required
hemodyalisis.
Conclusions. Acute renal failure is a common adverse outcome of toxaemic pregnancy. The early diagnosis and
accurate and diligent treatment of this condition poses a better prognosis in this group of patients.
