ABSTRACT
Background. Although diabetic retinopathy (DR), whose prevalence in Mexican population ranges from 15 to 21%, causes visual
impairment in the geriatric patient, its reported prevalence in diabetics diagnosed during geriatric age is 14%.
Aim. To identify
whether DR prevalence was lower in diabetics diagnosed during geriatric age, than in non-geriatric population.
Methods. DR
prevalence was retrospectively compared among type 2 diabetics younger than 60 years (group 1), and in diabetics diagnosed after
the age of 60 (group 2), using χ
2, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Patients were paired for diabetes duration and
arterial hypertension history.
Results. 442 patients were evaluated; diabetes duration ranked from less than one year to 20 years
(mean 4.8), 232 (52.5%) had arterial hypertension history and 60 (13.6%) DR. In group 1 (age 40-59 years, mean 50.2) 38 patients
had DR (17.2%); in group 2 (age 61-97 years, mean 71.9) 22 had it (9.95%). There was a statistical difference between groups (p =
0.003, OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.29-0.97).
Discussion. DR prevalence was lower than expected. In group 2, DR prevalence was lower
than that described in patients with diabetes diagnosed after the age of 60 years (z =1.73, p › 0.05) and almost a half of that in
group 1. Although a protective effect is suggested, it would be convenient to identify prospectively whether this difference is
consistent and clinical.
