ABSTRACT
This paper, written in response to six commentators, addresses the relationship between systemic family therapy and the diagnosis of psychopathology. One of the issues examined is the possible compatibility between a cross-sectional approach to psychopathology, one that emphasizes the existence of distinct domains with different relational bases, and a longitudinal approach that more closely resembles a developmental perspective. The article reflects upon the influence that the constructivist and social constructionist viewpoints have with regard to a relational-systemic diagnosis, and also speculates upon the role that the neurosciences and different psychotherapeutic contributions may come to play in this respect. Key elements of the history of family therapy are also highlighted, especially the role played by Bateson and Jackson in relation to the question of diagnosis. Finally, the paper takes a critical look at the interaction between a traumatic logic and a relational logic, which might overlap with a polarity between the negation and recognition of psychological suffering.REFERENCES
