Analysis of family environment in children with learning disorders

ABSTRACT
Introduction. Prevalence of learning disorders are from 2% to 30%, and it is associated with demoralization, low selfsteem and a deficit in social skills. Research has been reported a high correlation between family environment and low scholar outcome.Objective. To determine influence of family environment as a factor to the learning process.
Method. A prospective comparative study was done in a problem group of children with low scholar outcome (n = 20), and in a control group with normal academic outcome (n = 10). A clinical history, a standardized psychological set as well as pedagogic instruments were applied.
Results. The problem group shown significative deficiencies in lecture, writing, numeric skills as well as calculation abilities. Problem group had a less intellectual outcome and their parents did report to dedicate less time than parents of the control group do (p › 0.005). Alcohol use and family violence are discretely more prevalent for the problem group as compared with the control (p › 0.05).
Conclusions. In our study sample, low scholar outcome is associated with intellectual limitation, with the ipso of receive few attention from the parents, as well as in less degree with alcohol use and family violence. These findings emphasize the importance of the parents’ role in providing a family environment to favor growing and development of their offsprings.
