ABSTRACT
Background: penile cancer is an uncommon pathology; however, it is a serious health problem and when it is suspected magnetic resonance and computed tomography are considered elemental image studies for initial evaluation and prognosis of patients.Objetive: describe the usefulness of magnetic resonance and computed tomography in evaluation of patients with penile cancer at Hospital General de Mexico Dr. Eduardo Liceaga.
Material and Method: a transverse and descriptive observational study. We examined 250 patients with histopathological diagnosis of penile cancer and included 35 patients with image studies: 29 with computed tomography and 6 with magnetic resonance, between October 2011 and May 2016.
Results: We examined 250 patients with histopathological diagnosis of penile cancer. 35 patients had image studies, 29 computed tomography and 6 magnetic resonance. Of the cases with computed tomography, in 21 we identified inguinal or pelvic lymph nodes and in 2 cases pulmonary metastasis. In magnetic resonance, 4 patients had extension to adjacent structures, one with lesion in the body of the penis and another with neoplasms in the skin and on the superficial fascia.
Conclusion: magnetic resonance and computed tomography are non-invasive imaging methods of choice which facilitate evaluation of tumor size, nodal disease, and metastasis; they are fundamental complements to diagnosis, staging, and prognosis of penile cancer.
