ABSTRACT
Rationale: Excessive body weight and obesity
have become an important health problem in
Cuba. Women in bearing age could be exposed
to an obesogenic environment eventually
affecting their health status, and the health of the
product of conception.
Objective: To estimate
the behavior of excessive body weight among
child-bearing age women living in the
community without restrictions.
Study design:
Cross-sectional, analytical.
Study serie: One hundred and nineteen women with ages between
18–39 years living without restrictions in the
ward of Santa Fe, county of Playa, Havana city
(Cuba).
Material and method: Associations
between Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist
circumference (WC) with life conditions and life
styles (Alcoholism/Tobacco use/Physical
activity) of surveyed women were assessed.
Results: Forty-eight point eight percent of
women presented with BMI ≥ 25.0 Kg.m
-2. Observed frequency of obesity was 19.5%.
Thirty-four point five percent of women showed
WC › 80.0 cm. Anthropometric variables were
independent from life conditions and life styles of
women.
Conclusions: Global|central
adiposity of bearing-age women are
independent from life conditions and life
styles.
