ABSTRACT
Rationale: Tumor reduction might affect the
patient´s nutritional status, as well as to unchain
the onset of nutritional disorders. Once present,
malnutrition might be the cause of
complications, and reduced effectiveness of
therapeutic response.
Objective: To determine
the repercussion tumor-reducing treatment upon
patient´s nutritional status.
Study design:
Prospective, longitudinal, with two crosssectional
interventions.
Study serie: Twenty-nine patients (Males: 69.0%; Average age: 63.5 ±
11.9 years; Tumor´s prevailing location:
Digestive tube: 55.2%; Disease stage: Stage IV:
41.4%; Prior surgery: 31.0%) assisting to the
Outpatient Clinic, Clinical Nutrition Service,
“Dr. Luis Díaz Soto” Hospital (Havana city,
Cuba); as part of a tumor-reducing
chemotherapy protocol between August 2014
and August 2015.
Results: Eighteen patients
completed the tumor-reducing treatment.
Survival rate was 79.3%. On inclusion in the
study, status of nutritional indicators was as
follows (in decreasing order): Midarm
circumference ‹ Cut-off point: 34.5%;
Lymphocytes Global Count ‹ 1500 cells.mm
-3:
24.1%; serum Cholesterol: 24.1%; serum
Albumin: 24.1%; and Body Mass Index (BMI) ‹
18.5 Kg.m
-2: 17.2%; respectively. Tumorreducing
chemotherapy (co-administered with
radiotherapy or not) did not significantly affect
the behavior of nutritional indicators used when
the study serie was restricted to those completing
the treatment.
Conclusions: Tumor reduction
does not affect the nutritional status of those
patients completing a prescribed chemotherapy
protocol.
