Quality of life and nutritional status of the patient subjected to ambulatory chronic dialysis

ABSTRACT
Association between health-related quality of life
(HRQL) and nutritional status of end-stage
kidney disease (ESKD) patient subjected to
ambulatory hemodialysis (HD) was assessed by
means of a cross-sectional study completed with
30 patients (Males: 46.7%; Ages ≥ 60 years:
23.3%; Time of admission in the HD program:
44.4 ± 41.1 months) at the Service of
Nephrology, “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Hospital
(Havana City, Cuba), between January 2011 and
December 2011. Nutritional status was
established by means of the Subjective Global
Assessment survey developed by Detsky
et al.
(1987). ESKD patient´s quality of life was
assessed with the SF-36 questionnaire. Current
malnutrition frequency was 6.7%. Body Mass
Index (BMI) values distributed as follows: BMI
‹ 18.5 Kg.m
-2: 3.3%: BMI between 18.5–24.9
Kg.m
-2: 80.0%; and BMI ≥ 25.0 Kg.m
-2: 16.7%;
respectively. HRQL distributed as follows:
Low/Reduced: Scores ‹ 50.0%: 43.3%;
Moderate/Intermediate: Scores between 50.0–79.0%: 40.0%; and High: Scores › = 80.0%:
16.7%; respectively. HRQL of the ESKD patient
subjected to chronic dialysis was independent
from nutritional status.
