ABSTRACT
Amniotic band syndrome is an infrequent disease that intrigues for many decades to doctors assisting to patients that suffered from this, also to obstetricians, geneticists, pediatricians, infant surgeons or fetal pathologists. From the clinical point of view, it is characterized by the association of pathognomonic signs: presence of bands, skin grooves constriction, limb amputation and seudosindactilias. Also there are atypical face indents, clubfoots, and exencephalias and adnexa injuries. Limb injuries are the most frequent. Its incidence is estimated in about 1/10.000 live births, but it may be really more elevated due to lethal precocious forms. It is accepted widely that it is a sporadic disease, disruptive in origin and no malformative. However, its etiopathogenic mechanism is not known.
Many authors based in clinical findings and results from animal experimentation have developed many theories: endogenic, exogenic, vascular or genetics. None of them could be proved yet in humans. Therapeutic intervention is mainly postnatal intervention. There has been attempts of surgery in uterus by means of fetoscopy, but it is established the problem of the indication of a new technique, with risk for the treatment of a disease which functional prognosis is generally good.
