Prevalencia de estereotipos negativos hacia los adultos mayores en estudiantes de Odontología

ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the prevalence of negative stereotypes toward older
people among dental students.
Methods: A Cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study. It was not a
random sample. The subjects were 40 men and 40 women (mean age 20.9 ± 1.3 years) of the 5th cycle Dentistry career of public University of the State of Jalisco, Mexico. They had not taken the subject of Geriatric Dentistry. The age and gender were evaluated. To identify the prevalence of negative stereotypes towards old age a validated questionnaire was applied. With Likert type questions including health domains, social, motivational, character andpersonality. The student
T test and
chi square was applied to analyze data.
Results: The prevalence of negative stereotypes toward older adults and the
overall average was (43.8%) and (38.0 ± 5.3) respectively. The average of
social and motivational dimension was statistically different between men
(12.37 ± 1.9) and women (11.30 ± 2:24):
t (78) = 2.30, p ‹ 0.02).
Conclusions: A little less than half of the participants in this study had a
negative opinion regarding health, character, personality and social behavior of older adults. Women had significantly fewer negative stereotypes in motivational and social dimension than men.
