ABSTRACT

Melanonychia is the brown to black pigmentation of the nail as a result of the presence of melanin in the ungueal plate. Pigment can come from exogenous or endogenous sources. It can affect the entire nail plate or a part of it, as a transversely or more frequently longitudinal band. Melanonychia can be an early sign of melanoma nail so an adequate story is relevant. Diagnostic tools such as dermoscopy and histopathology analysis are useful to precise etiology and define treatment.
