ABSTRACT
Donkeys, mules and horses are used for fieldwork to carry loads, pull carts and for other tasks in many poor communities of Mexico helping marginated peasants. Most of these animals are overworked, undernourished and in bad general condition. The program entitled: “The International Donkey Protection Trust, The International League for the Protection of Horses, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (IDPT-ILPH-UNAM)” provides free veterinary care to working equids that could otherwise not be afforded by their owners. This paper describes the most common pathological conditions found in these animals, as well as possible causes. Among these, the most important ones are intestinal parasitism, wounds, poor body condition, bad tack and hoof problems. Finally, the importance of education is stressed, and it is recommended that short courses should be offered to young peasant in educational centres established for this purpose.REFERENCES
