ABSTRACT
Introduction. Psychiatric disorders have a chronic
course, fluctuating and disabling, with functional impairment
and disability. The current treatment approaches aimed
at improving the quality of life of patients and their families.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the quality of life of a
psychoeducation program, integrating the patient and family
in the treatment of mental illness, transforming them
into active participants, as part of routine clinical practice
with outpatients.
Material and methods. We invited to participate to 39
volunteers, male and female adults under 60 years, all
with mental illness, diagnosed and treated at the Unit of
Medical Specialties in the Outpatient Psychiatry, regardless
of their diagnosis, standard treatment or the course
of the disease. Once accepted to study entry were randomized
into two groups (A and B). Group A was added to the
usual treatment psychoeducation program, according to
the guides. The second group kept their usual treatment
without receiving psychoeducation.
Results. Questionnaires were applied and clinimetría
the two groups to evaluate the quality of life. Baseline recording
was obtained (top) and two weeks later. Both records
were analyzed and compared between groups (t test for dependent
groups).
Conclusion. We found statistically significant difference
between groups, concluding that the application of psychoeducation
program affects the quality of life of patients
with mental illness.
