ABSTRACT
Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent malignant skin tumor. Among the clinical subtypes of BCC, 90% will be nodular (BCCn) or superficial (BCCs). Due to the development of new non-surgical techniques to treat superficial BCC, high sensitivity and specificity non-invasive diagnosis methods for this BCC subtype are essential.
Objetives: To determine if there exists any correlation between BCCs specific dermoscopic features and their anatomic location and to correlate the findings with current literature.
Materials and methods: Observational retrospective study. 30 histopathologically proven BCCs in different anatomic locations were assessed by dermascopy.
Results: We examined 16 women and 14 men, with an average age of 56 years. Short fine telangiectasias were the most significant pattern in 22 lesions, followed by shiny white-red patches, maple leaf-like areas and shiny white lines. Glomerular vessels were only found in five lesions on lower limbs, with statistical significance (p ‹ 0.05). There were no significant differences according to the anatomic location of the remaining structures.
Conclusion: Current criteria described in recent medical literature might be applied with high sensitivity and specificity in a BCCs diagnosis regardless its location. Glomerular vessels may be an additional feature on lower limbs.
