C-reactive protein as a marker of cardiovascular risk in a cohort of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

ABSTRACT
Background: the C-reactive protein is an acute phase reactant, which has been associated with the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk.
Objective: Establish the relationship between the concentrations of C-reactive protein with cardiovascular risk and treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Methods: a study was performed in 166 patients with the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis according to the ACR/EULAR 2010 criteria. Serum concentrations of C-reactive protein were determined and compared with traditional cardiovascular risk factors and non-traditional, and the treatment used.
Results: significant difference was found between elevated concentrations of C-reactive protein and high levels of HDL-C (‹ 0,000), age (0,030), presence of diabetes mellitus (0,026), positive rheumatoid factor (0.004), triglycerides (‹ 0,003), higher disease activity (0,001) and metabolic syndrome (0,032). Framingham cardiovascular risk was found low (0.004) with lower concentrations of reactive protein and moderate risk (0.032) C found at higher concentrations. A low rate of Castellí (0,009) and Kannel (‹ 0,000) was found at lower values of C-reactive protein. Patients who used hydroxychloroquine and methotrexate had lower concentrations of C-reactive protein, opposite occurs with the use of glucocorticoids.
