ABSTRACT
Objetive:
To compare rehabilitation in a specialized center vs ambulatory rehabilitation in patients older than 60 years old which were summited to
arthroscopic plasty of the rotator cuff.
Material and Methods:
68 patients were included. They were divided into two groups in an aleatory, simple blinded way (34/34). They were periodically evaluated
at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after surgery using the CONSTANT and UCLA scales at 12 weeks. Group A consisted of patients who followed an
ambulatory rehabilitation program and group B consisted of patients who were treated at a specialized rehabilitation center. Descriptive and
inferential statistics were used to obtain the results, considering a valu of P‹ 0.05 as significative.
Results:
When both groups were compared there was no significative difference in mean age ( 65/65.09 years), gender (A=H/M 14:20 and B =
17/17) and extremity dominance ( 52/50%) . In the CONSTANT evaluation there was no significative difference p=0.090 ( IC 95% 437-5),
but at the 8th and 12th week evaluation there was a significant difference favoring group A with a mean of 80.15 to 92.06 vs 55.53 to 74.35 ( 8th
and 12th week group A –B). P‹0.001 ( IC 95% 21.27) and P‹ 0.001 ( IC 95% 15 -20). The UCLA evaluation was P‹0.001 IC 95% in favor of
group A.
Discussion:
An ambulatory rehabilitation program and office follow up has better outcomes than a rehabilitation program in a specialized center in
patients older than 60 years.
