ABSTRACT
The research was intended to analyze the concept of death or loss in homeless children or children living in the streets and in children and teenagers living with their families. A group of 30, 6 to 18 year-old children took part in this research study, 10 of which lived in the streets or were homeless and the rest lived with their families. Using 5 cards with 2 images depicting a duality regarding loss or death, the children were asked to tell a story about what they saw in those cards. The results showed that there were great differences in the concept of death or loss between the groups. In the stories of the children and teenagers who live with their families we observed a description based on specific aspects related to its environmental context, they perceived loss and death as accidents or natural causes that may happen. Children who live in the streets tell their stories based on their own experiences, featuring death as part of everyday life and social relationships.
