ABSTRACT
This qualitative research explores mothers’ expectations about the rehabilitation of their children with severe disabilities. This study took place in Centro de Rehabilitación Infantil Teletón Aguascalientes (a children’s rehabilitation center in Aguascalientes, Mexico). The sample was composed by 53 mothers of patients with severe disabilities, to whom a questionnaire on expectations was administered. The questions were regarding 1) upon learning of the diagnosis, 2) at the beginning of rehabilitation and 3) at present. Obtained information included the period of time knowing the diagnosis, since rehabilitation started and the period of time since rehabilitation at this center started. Most of the mothers expected their children to walk. Other expectations were movement, recovery and independence. Through this research, psychotherapeutic work was done with mothers so they could be able to take a look at the evolution of their expectations and place themselves more into the medical prognosis.
