ABSTRACT
Background: the total hip arthroplasty is one of the most effective orthopaedic surgeries that has been used for decades. It is one of the most successful operations in medicine. The clinical results after surgery and compliance during rehabilitation are influenced by the patient's expectations. Objective: to evaluate the short-term results after cemented total hip arthroplasty.
Methods: a descriptive study was conducted in 24 patients who had cemented total hip arthroplasty at "Octavio of the Concepción and of the Pedraja" Military Teaching Hospital in Camagüey, during 24 months, from January 2014 to December 2015 and average time of follow-up for patients was 10 months (with a range of 6 to 24 months). The universe and sample accounted for 24 patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the hip or another hip disorder who had gone through cemented total hip arthroplasty. Parameters such as age, sex, reasons for the surgery, complications, and pre-operative and post-operative functional scores were recorded.
Results: the 70 to 80 age group was the most frequent for a 41,60%, with an average age of 68 years (range of 42 to 80 years). Female sex was the most affected. The most frequent preoperative diagnosis was primary hip osteoarthritis with only one complication, a slight infection of the wound for a 4,10. At the end of the research the Visual Analogue Scale decreased 8,4 points and the average Harris Hip Score improved 39 points. The results of the cemented total hip arthroplasty were excellent and good in all the patients.
Conclusions: the study concluded that cemented total hip arthroplasty is a secure procedure with excellent benefits.
