ABSTRACT
Objective: To characterize the patients with the diagnosis of odontogenic and non-odontogenic facial
cellulites according to their clinical behavior, etiology and therapeutic management.
Materials and methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted, which included a sample of 112
patients admitted to the “Ciro Redondo García” Hospital of Artemisa, with diagnosis of facial cellulites, during
a period of five years (2010-2014). The analyzed variables were the following: age, sex, severity of the
patients, the antimicrobial therapy used and the pathogenic mechanism of this condition. The information
was presented in frequency tables and the percentage calculation was used as statistical method.
Results: Facial cellulites predominated in the group of patients aged 15-24 years (39.2%) and male.
Cellulites of moderate severity prevailed (54.4%), with a higher percentage of cases within odontogenic
etiology (41.9%), the most used antimicrobial therapy was the combination of crystalline penicillin G plus
metronidazole (35.7% %). The necrotic dental pulp (47.2%) and root rests (35.6%) were the fundamental
pathogenic mechanisms of odontogenic cellulites and facial skin infections in non-odontogenic patients
(44.0%).
Conclusions: Facial cellulite is a frequent reason for admission in this hospital. Its behavior from a clinical
and therapeutic point of view is similar to that described in other studies.
