ABSTRACT
Objective. To evaluate the current state of laparoscopy in pediatric urology.
Methods. International (PUBMED) and national literature search, to assess the status of the indications and results of different laparoscopic procedures dealing with pediatric urology, in the past 10 years (1995 to 2005).
Findings. In Mexico, there are some reports dealing with diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy for intrabdominal testis and varicocelectomies. In the international literature, multiple publications dealing with operative laparoscopy in pediatric urology were found. Many of those procedures are feasible in comparable operative times with open surgery, technically demanding, but with shortened hospital stays and excellent short-term outcome. This evolution has been expanded from initial diagnostic laparoscopy to ablative and reconstructive surgery. Robot assisted laparoscopic surgery will probably popularize the most challenging procedures.
Conclusions. Laparoscopic surgery in pediatric urology has gained popularity in the last decade, with an increasing number of centers performing advanced surgery. At the present time, the number of laparoscopic surgical procedures being performed is growing rapidly. Prospective, long term trials are needed to evaluate the benefits in relation to open procedures.
