ABSTRACT
Introduction: myiasis is the invasion and destruction of tissues or organs of animals (including man) by flies larvae; its symptoms and signs may be of little interest or include more violent disorder, even death. Although it is a disease universaly distributed, is more common in tropical and subtropical areas of America, Asia and Africa; poor personal and environmental hygiene is an important risk factor. Objective: to report a case of cutaneous myiasis, which can serve as reference material for health personnel who work both in Cuba and in other countries for recognition and appropriate management of the entity.
Case report: a female patient, with black skin and 25 years old, resident in Manica province, who attended consultation due to intense itching in the back and small raised lesions, umbilicated in the center, which increased in size gradually and they spread to the upper extremities and face. On physical examination several papules with serohematic liquid were observed; a papule was split in a cross-shaped way and a mobile larva, whitish, of 2-3 mm was extracted. The diagnosis was cutaneous myiasis; this was the first reported case in the province.
Conclusions: larvae infestation has autonomous invasiveness, so does not require the existence of previous injury or wound. Mechanical extraction of larvae by cruciform incision is recommended. Early detection and treatment of this disease avoid physical, aesthetic and psychological complications in patients.
