Value of carotid intima-media thickness in the diagnosis of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with valvular disease

ABSTRACT
Introduction. Carotid intima-media thickness has been shown to be associated not only with clinical atherosclerosis, but also with the subclínica.de therefore important to determine the value of carotid intima-media thickness in the diagnosis of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with valvular disease.
Methods. 62 patients scheduled for surgical valve replacement after performing invasive coronary angiography were studied. Before surgery carotid intima-media thickness measurement was performed using ultrasound. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, as well as the validity index and likelihood ratios for positive tests or negativas.
Results. Only 9 of the patients had significant coronary lesions. Artery carotid common thickness intima media carotic- values obtained in patients with significant coronary lesions was higher with median of 0.87 mm. The sensitivity and specificity obtained carotid intima-media thickness were 88 % and 83 % respectively, while the negative predictive value was 97 %.
Conclusions. The group of patients with significant coronary lesions showed carotid intima-media thickness values higher than the group without coronary lesions, demonstrating the diagnostic validity of the test for the detection of coronary atherosclerosis in patients studied.
