Blastocystis hominis a controversial pathogen in the genesis of gastrointestinal and allergic diseases

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Blastocystis hominis is a protozoan previously considered as part of the microbiota of the colon in humans, and is the parasitic agent most commonly found in human stool samples. In recent years it has been associated with different entities that affect the gastrointestinal tract. However, recently it has also been associated with allergic diseases such as urticaria, allergic rhinitis, angioedema and asthma.
Objective: To make a review of the dispute and possible explanations that exists in relation to the
Blastocystis hominis pathogenicity in gastrointestinal and allergic diseases.
Discussion: In this situation an analysis of the coproparasitoscopic practiced at the National Institute of Pediatrics, January 2003 to October 2015. In the database was a total of 9,637 fecal samples were identified, of which 2,409 (24.99%) were sent to related gastrointestinal pathology diagnosis, and 1,890 with a diagnosis related to diseases of allergic origin (19.61%). There is a possible relationship between
Blastocystis hominis and the development of allergic diseases and possibly be explained by their pathogenicity level of the intestinal mucosa, the microbiota and the immune response generated by this agent.
Conclusions: So far we can mention the frequent presence in fecal specimens of
Blastocystis hominis in children with different diseases, not only gastrointestinal, but also in allergic diseases.
