ABSTRACT
Objective: Determine the diagnostic value of 13 C–Urea breath test (Breath Tek UBIT,
Meretek, Co, Lafayette, Co, USA) TM in the diagnosis of
Helicobacter pylori infection in pediatric
and adults patients with probably peptic ulcer disease.
Methods: 13C-Urea breath test and
histopathological study of a biopsy obtained by esophago-gastroduodenoscopy was performed in 108
pediatric and adult patients using an infrared spectrometer (UBIT-IR-300 Photal, Otsuka Japan) TM.
The obtained results was statistical analyzed by X
2 test, U of
Fisher, Mann-Whitney and Spearman.
Results: Non statistically significative differences
were found with the breath test by: sex, age or value distribution of results The 13-C Urea
breath test shown a 100% of sensitivity and specificity compared with the biopsy results.
Conclusions: The 13-C urea breath test was very accurate in the differential diagnosis of
Helicobacter pylori infection, and in the confirmation of erradication after a course of a
antimicrobial therapy, in pediatric and adult patients. Besides, the urea breath test was a
quick on-site analysis (less 20 minutes) easy to do, and the instrument simple to operate.
